Name Cresset Lamp

Found in the cellar of the Town Hall, this lamp may have been used in one of the earliest buildings on this site, which lay witin the Medieval Jewish quarter.

This is a pedestal cresset lamp carved in the Norman architectural style.

A burning wick would have been floated in oil at the top of this lamp, whilst the spiked base would have been inserted into a bracket or in a loop suspended from the roof.
